Manchester plays host to hundreds of bands throughout the year, ranging from heavy metal to folk. They may be drawn towards the two universities, which dominate the city, or the thriving city centre, but one thing is for sure they certainly call Manchester their home. The northern city plays host to many up and coming bands, some drawn in from surrounding towns others use the city as a stop off on their country-wide tours. As Manchester is the only major city in the North West the city acts as the cultural hub of the region. Standing aside from the industrial legacy of the surrounding areas Manchester stands tall and is a beacon for the region. Manchester classifieds pull people into the city, promising musical adventures and opportunities to see some of the best bands in the world. The city has always had a reputation for producing incredible music and was at the centre of the phenomenon that was Northern Soul. The city was also a big player in the nineties with genres like Acid House and Indie music. The Madchester music scene was popular in the city from the late 1980s to the beginning of the 1990s, with bands such as The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, the Charlatans, the Inspiral Carpets and James mixing alternative rock, psychedelic rock and dance music. The new sound led to commercial success in the indie rock field and promoted the Madchester music scene throughout the country. With a plethora of other musicians being born in the Greater Manchester the region has a reputation for creating great musical talent. Other famous Manchurians include, Richard Ashcroft and Jay Kay, of the acid jazz band Jamiroquai. Acid house and illegal raves played a huge part in history of the city’s culture in late 80s and early 90s. The phrase of the scene ‘high on hope’ became the phrase of the region and the party continues in the city, it has changed shape and sounds different but the city still produces some exciting talent.
