I very recently took a trip the The States, and whilst I loved every minute, it took me a little while to get my head around the whole tipping culture. So I though I would share what I learned here.
Tipping in America is simply the done thing. It doesn’t matter where you are from, when you are in the US you should understand that it is common place and part of the culture. The following is a top 5 guide to tipping for anyone visiting the beautiful country on American holidays
1. Have some dollars ready. A good amount of dollar notes should be carried in your wallet at any one time so make sure you ask for a little extra at the currency exchange. This means you won't have to ask for change and you can tip whatever value you want easily. Although requesting change is quite commonplace also so don’t be shy about asking if you need to
2. Bars. Drinks bought at the bar should really be tipped at about a dollar each. If your round extends to more than 3 drinks then just reduce this ratio slightly. A 10% bill should be added to the total if you are served your drink sitting down by a bar man or lady
3. Restaurants. This one is really determined by the version of eating joint you are at. Those at the lower end of the market only need tipping in the region on 15%. For more formal sit-down meals you should expect to pay along the lines of 20-25% of the cheque. If the staff go the extra mile for you then you should really thank them by tipping a little extra for their work.
4. Bags. The porter who brings the bags to the room will probably be expecting a tip of one dollar per bag. Give more if you think it is warranted but it is advised not to go lower or offer change to the porter. Airport bag carriers should be tipped around a dollar - per piece of luggage
5. Poor service. Don't reach for you tipping dollars if you don't find the service is up to scratch. Your choice should be explained to those in charge though. Constructive feedback is generally appreciate in the USA and the people you give it to are rarely offended
Thanks for sharing! and that gives me the idea of adding a tipping manners section in each country :)
Great idea! I'm heading to Canada soon so could add one for there as well
